On Tuesday, November 22, our students had their 1st Trimester school-wide PAWS celebration. Mr. Patrick Dunning, a native of Ireland brought The Signature Project to Sanfordville. The Signature Project is multi-faceted. Its core is a huge 76 ft x 36 ft mural layered with hidden secrets. The live performance brought the mural to life, with artist Patrick Dunning ingeniously weaving stories and images in the great tradition of Irish artists. A unique, exhilarating tapestry blending art and technology, the live performance of The Signature Project also offers the opportunity for our teachers and staff to join over 300,000 people whose signatures already comprise the fabric of this monumental art work. Teachers and students were moved by the presentation which truly is a celebration of life and diversity. Many claimed it was the best assembly they have ever had! www.signatureproject.com

On Monday, October 31st, our PTA sponsored Sanfordville’s annual Spooktacular. Over 100 parent volunteers helped with games and activities for students in the gym. Every class came to the Spooktacular for 20 minutes. Always a special part of the day is when the 4th graders spend time with their Kindergarten buddies at the event. Thank you PTA and all of our volunteers!
As an outreach to support one of their core programs, the Warwick Lions Club provided free vision screening to our kindergartners as a community service. The Lions offer this service as the first few years of a child’s life are critical in the development of good vision. Children should have their vision checked for issues such as misaligned eyes and problems that need correction with eyeglasses. These problems are not always evident by simply looking at a child. Young children often compensate for vision problems so well that parents, teachers, and pediatricians are unaware of a problem. Many common vision-robbing conditions can be effectively treated if detected in a child’s formative years. A handful of students received referrals to follow up with their doctors as eye issues were detected.
Our local Rotarians visited our 4th grade classes to present our students with Dictionaries. They engaged students in a discussion about the history and core values of the Rotary Club, the use of dictionaries, and some fun facts about words! Our students truly enjoyed the visit and were very appreciative of the gift.
We recognized Red Ribbon Week at Sanfordville this week, October 24th - the 28th. Although Red Ribbon Week is nationally celebrated to heighten awareness about the importance of being drug and alcohol free, our focus at the elementary level was on making healthy and wise choices as well as showing respect to ourselves and to others. Teachers incorporated these topics into their lessons throughout the week. All staff looked for students who were making healthy, wise, and respectful choices, to give out “PAWS” bracelets as a reinforcement. We started each day with a morning announcement about Red Ribbon Week and making healthy and wise choices. We kicked off the week on Monday, October 24th, by having all students and staff district-wide wear RED clothing. On Friday, October 28th, students signed a pledge banner to “make healthy and wise choices” which will be displayed in the cafeteria. Students were also given the option to participate in the county-wide Substance Abuse Prevention Poster Design Contest. This year’s theme is “You Only Have One Life, Live It Alcohol and Drug Free”. Teachers reviewed the guidelines with students.
Revolutionary Walks… Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Eaton led the Revolutionary Walking Tours on the grounds of Sanfordville Elementary. Our 4th grade students learned about George Washington’s encampment that was on the fields of Sanfordville. Many interesting facts about the Baird’s Family Farm were shared with students.
WVHS Homecoming Parade… For the second year now, the WVHS invited the elementary schools to take part in their spirited Homecoming Celebration Parade. Sanfordville brought twelve 4th grade students and their parents to march the parade route with their principal. Our students were full of excitement and pride for Warwick and their future high school. They loved the comic-book themed floats and the energy of all of the participants and spectators. Thank you to the Homecoming staff and high school administrators for including our students once again!
PTA Bingo Night...On Thursday, October 13th our PTA sponsored a Bingo Night in the Sanfordville cafeteria. Over a hundred people came to spend some time with family and friends, play bingo, and win prizes. Thank you to our PTA for another successful event!
Mrs. Fitzgerald and Mrs. Disy’s classes completed a narrative writing project entitled “The Best Part of Me”. Students identified a part of themselves which makes them special and wrote about it. Students followed the writing process through our Writers’ Workshop model. Students accompanied a photo with their writing. Their published work was mounted and displayed in our hallways.
